A trip to the ER
Oh my goodness, Jacob gave Bill and I a big scare this afternoon. Here's the whole story...
This morning Nani came over to take Jacob to spend some time with him since she had not seen him in a while (because we were in San Francisco last week). Anyway, Bill and I were happy to let Jacob spend some time with his Nani and Papa. We ended up getting invited to our friend's house to watch the Laker game. So we picked up Jacob from my parent's house so he could go with us to play with his friend Christian. While at my mom's she mentioned that he felt a little warm. I didn't really think too much of it because I thought he was teething...classic signs of Jacob teething, gnawing on everything in sight, a clear runny nose and a bit of a temperature. So we went to our friends and he was having a great time playing with his friend. After about an hour of playing, Bill picked him up and said that he felt really warm. We asked our friends to get a thermometer so we could check his temperature. There were only about a minute or so left in the half or quarter, I don't remember which, so we said just to wait until the break...well...in the mean time, Jacob was sitting on the floor in front of Bill, Christian was sitting in front of me and they were playing with some toys. All of a sudden, Jacob falls back. The fall looked really strange to me and I said something to Bill about the fall. Bill said that he threw himself back, which is not unusual for Jacob, but he only does that when he's upset, and he was having a good time playing with Christian. Bill moved his legs to pick him up and his voice changed...I'm not exactly sure what he said, but the next thing I knew was he was holding Jacob and Jacob's eyes were moving in a very unusual way. Then he began to shake in Bill's arms. Bill said "he's seizing" I told him to lay him on the ground and for someone to call 911. I think that was the only good thing I did for the next 5-8 minutes. Bill thought he hit his head as he threw himself back and that thats what was causing the seizure. As soon as I saw Jacob laying on the ground convulsing, I left the room, almost not knowing what to do. I heard my friend on the phone with 911. She asked me a couple of questions, I don't know what now, I think I answered her with the right answers and then I saw her stairs, dropped to my knees and prayed for my baby. I prayed that God would be with him and stop him from convulsing and that everything would be okay. I stood up and went back into the room with my baby and Bill. Christina was still on the phone with the 911 operator who told her to have us take off his clothes and start putting cold cloths on him. I got a towel from the kitchen, wet it and started putting it on Jacob. He was still seizing at this point. One of their friends, Mike, kept brining me new cold towels for Jacob. The whole time Jacob was convulsing, Bill and I were talking to him letting him know that we were there and that he would be okay, but honestly I didn't know what was going on. I remember asking God to stop him from shaking and I think at one point I told Jacob to stop shaking (like he could really control what was going on, but I was desperate at that point). We think the seizure lasted between 3 and 5 minutes, but it felt like FOREVER. I remember just thinking that he needed to stop because in my mind the longer the seizure, the worse it would be. He finally stopped and we layed him on his side. He was definitely not coherent. His eyes were open then closed and he just layed there breathing kind of funny. The paramedics arrived a couple of minutes later and I really don't know what they were doing to him. I just sat there rubbing my baby's arm telling him he was okay and that mommy and daddy were there. Bill was right there with him too, touching him and talking to him. I can't believe how calm he was through the whole ordeal. They told us that he would need to go to the hospital and that it was best for him to go in the ambulance, just in case he had another seizure. I went in the ambulance with Jacob and Bill followed behind. He called both our parents on the way to the hospital and when we arrived, my parents were already there! On the way to the hopsital Jacob was still not himself. he refused his pacifier a couple of times and he wasn't moving much. I was getting a little nervous about his lack of movement in his arms, but he eventually moved them and made me feel a lot better. When we arrived at the hospital, he was a little more alert, but I could tell he was still not 100%. They gave him some tylenol and motrin and the doctor came to see him. She said the seizure was a febrile seizure, caused by a spike in his temperature and that it was probably a result of Roseola. We will see in a few days if he breaks out in a rash. He had a temperature of 102.8 at the hospital and felt really warm. His daddy was holding him and he ended up falling asleep in his arms while the doctor explained everything to us. We were released soon after and told to simply treat his temperature with tylenol and motrin. As we were leaving Jacob woke up when Bill gave him to me so he could go get the car. We walked outside and he saw an ambulance, pointed to it and said "truck" It was then that I felt a lot better, my baby was back to normal. Nani and Papa were waiting outside for us and he got excited when he saw them. On the way home from the hospital, he was tired but when he saw a bike drive by, he pointed and said "bike." Yep, back to normal. When we got home he ate lots of animal crackers, not wanting anything else we put in front of him. His temperature felt like it was going down. He fell asleep at about 7pm and he is still asleep (he even slept through 2 rectal temperature readings!) Right now it's 11:30pm. When I last checked his temperature he didn't have one. He is sleeping in our bed tonight so we can keep an eye on him and feel his temp throughout the night. I don't want that temperature to get high again. I NEVER want to experience that again!
Bill and I agree that this is the worst thing we've ever been through. I still can't get that picture out of my head of him laying on the floor having the seizure. I tear up everytime I picture it, which unfortunately right now is often. I thank God that my baby is okay now. I do not want to have to experience that again! so our little angel sleeps right now and I pray that he has a good night's rest and is 100% better in the morning. so until next time...mommy and daddy love you (and will be checking your temperature often for the next day!)
we'll write about our trip to San Francisco and post the pictures sometime later this week

While at the park he met a little "friend" named Aubrey, a 2 1/2 year old cutie. They played with the truck together and then toward the end of our visit they started to go down the slide together. I must say Aubrey was a little aggressive because she grabbed Jacob's hand and they went to the top of the slide together (holding hands!) It was adorable. They did that a few more times and then it was time for us to go home. Aubrey said she wanted to kiss Jacob goodbye! WHAT!?!?!?!? Before I knew it, she was puckering up and laying one on him. I didn't manage to get the actual kiss on camera, but I did get the puckering up part. Jacob's response? He gave her a high five....typical boy! I'm sure Jacob will be looking out for Aubrey the next time we are at the park! You can check out our pictures to see more of the two of them together and some video clips too! It really was too cute!

Today was HOT, so we decided to take a drive to Newport to walk around. Nani and Papa came with us. The plan was to just walk along the bike path for about an hour, have some snacks then come home. So we packed everything up and headed out. After a lot of traffic and difficulty finding a parking space, we finally made it to the bike path. Papa had the stroller and he kept going straight to the water. Of course, I did not bring Jacob's swim trunks or water diaper because in my head we weren't going into the water...but plans changed. We ended up taking Jacob into the water to "get his feet wet." Little did we know that he would LOVE THE WATER and kept wanting to run into the waves. We really had to keep and eye and hand on him the whole time. He soon realized how to stomp in the water to make little splashes.
He didn't really know what to feel when he stood in the water and the wave returned to the ocean...a couple of times it almost knocked in over...actually I think it did once and his face got all full of sand, but he loved it.(if you look really close at the picture of him sitting in the sand below you can see the sand on his forehead still!) We spent quite a bit of time letting him play in the water, of course his shorts got all wet, so we ended up taking them off and let him run around in his diaper, play in the sand, flirt with a little girl and then it was time to go. He had a blast. Daddy hosed him off at the showers and then we had snack time as Jacob people watched. He loved seeing all the bicycles ride by and all the doggies being walked. It was well past his nap time but he was wide eyed and bushy tailed! Then we took our walk down the path toward the pier. Of course we stopped for and ice cream and Jacob got out of the stroller to chase the birds and feed them cheerios. Then we walked down the pier and back to the car. About halfway back to the car he FINALLY fell asleep...this was at about 3pm! The lastest he's ever fallen asleep for a nap! He had such a great time though. He was so adorable to watch in the water...running into the waves as much as we would let him. We got lots of photos and video of the event. I think he's going to end up being a little surfer...he loved the water. We all had a great time at the beach and I'm sure we will have to go back often! Nani and Papa were glad they went to experience Jacob's first time in the water. I think they had a good time too!
We got home and by then he was already awake from his short nap. He went immediately into the bathtub to get all the sand off of him and his hair!
This afternoon some mommies and kids from stroller strides decided to go to the movies to see Dr. Suess' Horton Hears A Who. I was hesititant about taking Jacob, but then figured, if he's really bad then we'll just leave. There were four kids there, Jacob, Christian, Brixie Lee, and Malaya. They all had their booster seats and snacks. Jacob had some milk, apple juice, goldfish and veggie booty. He was ready to watch the movie. He sat next to his best bud, Christian. He actually did really well for about 30 minutes. He sat there watching the movie and snacking on his snacks. It was kind of scary to see how good he was at watching the movie and eating...he looked just like a grown-up chowing on popcorn at the movies. After about 30 minutes he was "done" he wanted out of his seat and then was on and off my lap for about 15 minutes. Then he wanted to walk around. So he was walking up and down the aisle, pointing out each little light on the floor. Then we ventured outside the theater into the lobby. Brixie Lee was out there playing running around so he joined her. They "played" the car arcade for awhile and then it was time to go back into the theater to watch the end. He did pretty well for the end of the movie.
