18 month check up

Jacob had his 18 month check up this morning.  Here are his stats.  weight:  24lbs 13oz (somewhere in the 20th percentile).  Length 34 1/4 inches (somewhere in the 95th percentile).  So we still have a long skinny child!  He did okay during his appointment.  When Dr. Kotures was asking me about his developmental progress, Jacob was climbing all over me and the chair I was sitting in.  I guess he didn't need to ask me about his climbing abilities.  However, when it came time to check him out, Jacob was a crying mess.  I was afraid he was going to kick the Dr. so I spent most of that time holding down his legs.  He also had to get three shots today.  He definitely did not like that.  The nurse really struggled to hold down his legs.  I think she had her entire body weight on him to hold him down. He is super human strong when he is upset. Maybe we should call him "The Hulk"  His checkup went well.  He is in good health and on target developmentally.  I was a little concerned about his language development, but the Dr. assured me he is on target.

After his appointment we met Christian and Malaya at California Adventure.  We all went on the new ride, Toy Story Mania (or whatever it's called).  Jacob did okay on the ride, but about half way through, he snuggled a little closer to me.  He enjoyed his ride on the carousel, riding on the sea otter.  His most favorite part was running around with Malaya in the animation place.  It was nice and cool in there and he liked running around to the music and trying to catch the spotlights on the ground.  He fell asleep during lunch so he didn't eat much today :(  When we got home he started playing with his train set.  He loves that thing, but also gets so frustrated with it.  If the car gets stuck he gets upset.  He was actually on the ground for 15 minutes crying his head off.  When I tried consoling him he either pulled out my hair (yes, he had quite a few pieces of my hair in his hand when he pulled away) or tried biting me.  So he was back on the ground.  Finally I couldn't take it anymore and since it was about 5:30, I went to get daddy for reinforcement.  The little stinker stopped crying right away with daddy!

We have new neighbors a few houses away and we finally met them tonight. They have three young children, 9, 5 and 3.  Jacob played with all of them with no problems.  I think he had a good time playing while we were talking to their parents.  He cried when we told him it was time to go home.

New things he is doing...when something doesn't go well, he say's "oh no."  It sounds really cute.  He is also trying to jump but he can't get both feet off the ground at the same time so he hops from one foot to the other.  Tonight when I was brushing his teeth, I noticed his two top canines peeking through.  Could this be the reason for all the crabbiness?  About a week and a half ago I bought a preschoolers devotional book.  We have been reading from it most nights (we missed a couple because we got home late and he was already asleep when we got home).  After we read from it, we tell him we are going to pray.  We taught him to put his hands together and then either Bill or I will say a prayer for him.  He is so adorable with his hands folded.  We pray before we eat, but we've never had him hold his hands together, because we are usually holding his hands when we pray for dinner.  So it's something new for him.  He has been sleeping in a little later each morning.  He used to wake up every morning at 6am, but lately it's been more like 7 and a couple of times he's woken up after 8!  He has also been going to bed later at around 8 or 8:30 so this explains his late wake up time.  I am definitely not complaining about the later wake up time.  I either get to sleep in or can get a few things done before he wakes up.  He loves pointing out parts of his body, but his most favorite right now is his tongue.  He LOVES showing us his tongue.  He is also getting better at closing his mouth when he gives us kisses.  He will even add the "MOWA" after his gives me a kiss.  Daddy has also taught him to "pound it" when he gives his fist to another gut to "pound"  He is so funny because instead of his hand facing down in the fist, it's facing up, so it's an upside down "pound."

I know he is doing more fun stuff. But I'm tired and can't think of anything else right now, so when I do I will write more.  So until next time...mommy and daddy love you!

Jacob's First Concert

Our city sponsors "Concerts in the Park" each summer.  I've been meaning to go to them since they started years ago, but just never got around to it.  Last night we decided to take Jacob.  We met some of his friends and their parents there.  Christian, Brixie Lee, Malaya, and Jacob all had a great time eating dinner at the park and listening and dancing to some good 80's music.  The parents had a good time too!  We went to El Pollo Loco, grabbed some dinner and took it to the park to eat on our blanket.  It really was a lot of fun and we're hoping to do it each Wednesday night until the summer ends.

Today Jacob got his 4th haircut.  He was NOT happy with it.  He cried the entire time and clinged to me while she cut his hair.  His stylist was very good with him.  She managed to get a good haircut despite the SCREAMING he did.  His hair was so long and it was making his head hot.  On Wednesday we were at the park and he was wearing his hat.  When I took off his hat, it looked like he had just gotten out of the bath tub, that's how wet his hair was.  So I couldn't wait any longer to cut his hair.  It's the shortest we've ever cut it, but it looks really cut on him and I'm hoping it will keep him cool this summer.

After his nap we went to Toys R Us to get another free train (because I ran over the last one), but when we got there they said they were no longer accepting the coupons.  I guess they figured out that many people (us included) were printing out multiple coupons and getting lots of free Thomas train cars.  So instead of getting a Thomas car, daddy said we could get him the GeoTrax.  Yes, it was expensive, but he REALLY enjoys it and it came with LOTS of tracks and several train cars, a much better value than the Thomas stuff.  After dinner and his bath, daddy and Jacob put the tracks together and Jacob spent the rest of the evening playing with his new train.  He was seriously playing with it for over an hour and not a peep from him.  I actually got to get a lot of stuff done!

Tomorrow we are going to Disneyland in the afternoon with Luke and his mommy and daddy.  I'm sure we will have a great time...so until next time...mommy and daddy love you!

Bad morning, but GREAT afternoon!

Yesterday Jacob had his first official Little Gym class.  We decided to enroll in Little Gym classes for the summer instead of swim classes.  It's been so hot outside and after our morning workout with Stroller Strides, being in the sun for another 45 minutes was not fun.  He likes his swimming lessons, but I think he will enjoy the Little Gym a lot more.  We had quite a busy day though.  We started the morning at 8:30 for Stroller Strides.  It was a bit cooler than it has been, which was nice for mommy.  Jacob definitely woke up on the wrong side of the crib.  He was a little stinker when we were home getting ready to go.  He didn't even eat all of his breakfast (pancakes...he usually loves them).  So we got in the car and drove to the park.  He was whining almost the whole time we were there.  Then the final straw...while I was on the ground doing our ab work, he threw a car at me and hit me on my forehead...oh, I was not a happy mommy at that moment.  So then we were off to swim classes at 10:30.  He was crying a little in the car on the way there.  I was debating on whether or not to even go to swim class, but since this is our last week, I didn't want to cheat ourselves of the good money we spent on the classes.  So we got there and he was still crabby.  Everything was "NO"  He didn't even want to ride on the big fish that he usually loves riding on.  When Miss Tracey asked if he wanted to go on the fish, he shook his head and said "no."  Even Miss Tracey was surprised about that one.  So after being in the pool for 30 minutes and having a tough time with it, we finally got out and made our way home.  He fell asleep in the car and slept for 3 hours when we got home.  I think the little stinker was tired!

He woke up in such a happy mood (FINALLY!!!).  We had to go to Costco and the whole time I was pushing him in the cart he was giving me hugs and kisses.  I LOVED every minute of it.  In fact I wanted all the other people in the warehouse to see my loving son giving me hugs.  It's such a rare occassion that he is a good boy for an entire shopping trip and being so loving to boot!  I was such a happy mommy at that point!

Later, Nani and Papa came over for dinner.  Daddy BBQ'd some chicken and while he was cooking it, Jacob was outside with him playing with his T-ball.  The two of them were so cute.  After dinner we headed over to Little Gym.  nani and papa came to watch his first experience.  When we arrived he was looking into the gym just waiting for them to open the door.  Once the door opened, he was so excited he didn't even know what to do.  He was standing in place moving his feet.  I think because he didn't know what direction to take his body.  It was hysterical.  He loved being able to explore the whole place.  He did okay when it came time to following directions too.  He actually sat on the red mat when Miss Melissa asked him to.  He also walked on the balance beam and did a somersault on the cheese mat.  I think he really like doing the somersault because he must have done about 10 of them while we were there.  When he was done with one, he would throw himself into the position that he landed in almost as if to say, let's do it again.  He was good about following directions to lift his hands to the sky and then touch his hands to the ground and then to look at his tummy before he rolled over.  All I can say is that it was so much fun to watch him.  When they brought out the bubbles he went CRAZY.  He was so excited he even bumped into the wall and bounced off it.  He sat there for a few seconds not knowing what happened, but then he saw the bubbles and forgot about apparently hurting himself.

So what started out as a bad day turned out to be a great day for all of us.  so until next time...mommy and daddy love you!

Happy Father's Day

Jacob was nice to his daddy and didn't wake up until 7am a whole extra hour of sleeping in for daddy (and mommy too!) We woke up daddy and went to get his gift.  Jacob got his daddy an Angel's shirt, a polo shirt, shorts, boxers and the big gift...PLAYSTATION 3!!!!  Daddy was SO excited about this gift.  Unfortunately he didn't have the actual console because it was in the mail.  That morning, mommy and Jacob got daddy his favorite coffee from Starbucks.  Later that afternoon, Papa and Nani came over for a bar-b-que of carne asada.  Uncle RJ and Auntie Sonnia, and her parents also joined us.  We had a great time and Jacob got to play in his pool while daddy was bbq-ing the meat. Daddy and Jacob go to spend lots of time together and had a good day.

***UPDATE*** Daddy got his PS3 in the mail on the Thursday after Father's Day.  He was so excited to get it.  I think he's played with it everyday since!

Graduations galore

Wow, we've had a busy week.  We had two graduations to go to!  Jacob's cousin, Chris, graduated from high school on Wednesday.  We were fortunate to be able to attend the actual graduation ceremony.  Jacob was such a GOOD boy during the ceremony.  He played with his plane and train and ate some crackers and he was a happy little boy.  He cheered with all of us as Chris received his diploma.  After the ceremony we all went to dinner.  Jacob had fun eating with his two cousins, Chris and Kevin.  He was also a good boy during dinner.  Mommy and daddy were so proud of him.  Then the next morning we attended cousin Andrew's promotion ceremony from 8th grade.  Again Jacob was AWESOME!  He sat on all of our laps while playing with his toys and drinking his water.  It was pretty hot outside but he was a trooper.  After the ceremony we went to the Gunnin's house for lunch.  Jacob had a great time playing with Buttercup, the dog and his cousins Whitney and Andrew.  He was having such a great time, but he was so sweaty.  His whole head was wet, he looked like he had just gotten out of the tub.  He finally fell asleep on the way home and slept for 3 1/2 hours!! wow oh wow!  he was a tired little one.  When he finally woke up we went to Christians house to watch the Laker game.  Both Jacob and Christian were such fans.  Whenever we got excited the boys raised their hands with excitement and clapped their hands.  It was ADORABLE!!!

So, we are headed to graduations parties this Saturday for cousin Corty, who also graduated from high school this week and then for Chris.  We are definitely pretty busy.  Sunday is FATHER'S DAY!  Jacob is so excited to give his daddy his gift.  We can't say here what we got daddy, but on Monday we'll post and tell how daddy LOVED his gift!!!

So until next time...mommy and daddy love you

Swim lessons (again)

Jacob started his swim lessons this week.  We are taking parent-tot swim classes at the YMCA again.  We started on Tuesday and it was a cool morning.  I think Jacob was a little tired and not used to the water.  He cried about 70% of the time we were in the pool and I actually took him out of the water about 5 minutes early.  I figured he needed a day to adjust to being in the pool again.  It's been a LONG time since he's been in a pool.  He must have been REALLY tired because he took a 3 hour and 15 minute nap when we got home!  I couldn't believe it!  When we got back in the pool on Thursday he did MUCH better and was smiling the whole time.  He really enjoyed jumping in the water (of course I caught him and he didn't get his face wet...something he does not like too much right now).  Daddy joined us (but not in the water).  He was taking lots of pictures and video of Jacob in the water.

Friday night we met up the the Kollen family at Irvine Spectrum.  Jacob and Luke ran around the bookstore after dinner...they were too cute.  Jacob loves to play in bookstores.  He loves finding books with Elmo, Mickey Mouse and Thomas the Train!  He was making me laugh watching him go from one part of the store to the other...you would have thought he was in a playground, not in a bookstore.

I really think he's had another growth spurt.  We were outside playing basketball the other day and I was able to raise the basket a little and he was able to "dunk" the ball!  When we first received the basketball hoop we had to tilt the hoop down just a little in order for him to make the shot.  Well now it's at it's normal height (well, the lowest height) and he does just fine.  He loves playing basketball!  Thursday night the Lakers played and he and his daddy put on their Lakers jerseys and went outside to shoot some hoops before the game started.  They were so adorable pretending they were playing in the NBA championship game.

This weekend we had a pretty uneventful weekend.  For the first time in a long time we had NOTHING on the calendar.  Next weekend will be a completely different story, so we took advantage of this weekend and basically did nothing...okay, well not nothing, but it was nice not having anything planned.  We did head over to the Shoppes so I could do a little shopping.  The boys went over to the water fountain to play in the water while I shopped.  Jacob got a little wet, but ended up falling down and not wanting to play anymore.  oh well.   He is really enjoying playing in water.  Now if I could just get him to like rinsing his hair off in the bath.  The second just a little bit of water runs down his face, he is ready to get out of the tub.

Sunday we went to church and this was the first time that Jacob did not cry when we left him at Sunday School.  Well, we thought he didn't cry, but according to the teacher, once he stopped playing with a toy and realized that we were not there, he started to cry...my poor baby!  Well, at least he's getting a little better.

He's getting better at dealing with his tantrums.  He's had fewer tantrums in the last week than previous weeks, but he still has them once in a while.  I don't know what it is that is working, but I am ignoring him when he has one and trying to stop them before they start.  In the car we are doing a lot of counting of objects (trees, cars, etc.), sing songs, and watch out for trucks and bikes whenever he starts to throw a fit about whatever.  It's still frustrating to Bill and me since it seems like his is whining or crying all the time, but we have to learn to deal with it, afterall, he's a toddler and that's what they do.  We are encouraging him to use words to ask for what he wants...which is what causes a lot of his crying.  He wants something but doesn't know how to ask for it so instead we are playing the guessing game and that is frustrating for all of us.  He still only has a few words and even those words he hasn't been using much.  He did add "papa" (for my dad) and "grandpa" (Bill's dad) to his vocabulary this week.  he's only said Grandpa once, but it was definitely grandpa.  Anyway, I hope his vocabulary begins to grow soon, so we aren't playing the guessing game much longer.

Lastly, he's started making this very strange sound that neither Bill nor I like very much.  It's hard to describe, but it's almost like a roaring sound, but he doesn't do it when he's acting like an animal.  I don't like it very much and tell him not to make that sound anymore, but does he listen?!?! NOOOO!  Oh well.

Okay, enough for today.  So until next time...mommy and daddy love you!

Day at the Beach

Yesterday Jacob went to Laguna beach with his two friends, Christian and Drew (and their mommies of course).  We got there and set up our blanket and then had some lunch.  The boys ate fairly well considering.  After lunch we went to play in the waves.  The water was a little cold, but Jacob didn't mind.  He LOVED the water.  We played for a long time in the water, then he went to play in the sand and explore the beach.  After a few minutes of that, we were back in the water.  He loved being picked up and put back into the water.  After playing a little more in the water we went to play in the playground area.  Jacob loved to go down the slide.  He finally ventured into the tunnel and went to the other end of the jungle gym.  We played there for a long time and then went over to the swings.  I think Jacob must have been on the swing for about 15 -20 minutes.  By the end of that, all he boys were ready to head home.  They all fell asleep within 5 minutes of being in the car.  They were such good boys the whole day (well the 3 hours we were there).  They all loved playing in the water and it was such a beautiful day and hopefully we will get back there a few more times this summer. I completely forgot my camera, but as it turns out, I don't think I would have taken many pictures anyway.  I had my eyes on him the whole time and didn't let him out of my sight.  I didn't want a lens in my way!

In other news, Jacob has been throwing tantrums lately.  Sometimes he will have 2 or 3 a day.  They tend to happen when he wakes up either in the morning or after his nap, right before he's going to go to sleep, or when he gets frustrated with one of his toys.  It's quite trying for both Bill and me.  I've started to just ignore him and it will usually go on for a few more minutes and then he calms down.  Today we've been tantrum free, which is good, but it's only 11:30 so we'll see how today goes.

This morning we started swim lessons again at the YMCA.  Jacob did okay.  He cried on and off throughout the half hour lesson.  We actually got out of the pool about 5 minutes early.  I don't know if he was cold or just not used to the water.  I hope he likes it when we go back on Thursday.  So until next time...mommy and daddy love you!
